Heading into this week, Nick Good-Malloy and his coaching staff at Annapolis had no doubts that their players understood the gravity of Friday’s matchup at No. 6 Old Mill.
In addition to Anne Arundel County supremacy, the top seed in the Maryland 4A East region playoffs hangs in the balance when the No. 13 Panthers travel to Millersville for a matchup of unbeaten teams.
Rather than add more weight to the situation, Good-Malloy and the Panthers’ staff decided to “keep things loose.” And what better way to do that than with a mock professional wrestling exhibition on Halloween?
“Unbeknownst to the kids, all the coaches, we dressed up as professional wrestlers,” Good-Malloy said. “Our field house is up on a hill, and all the players were down on the field. We had an announcer and entrance music for each guy, and we put on a little wrestling exhibition for them just to kind of start out the week on a fun note.”
The Panthers’ coaching staff, which includes Bill Phoebus, who has been with the school since the 1970s, cannot recall the last time two undefeated schools squared up in the final week of the regular season.
The Cavaliers (2-6, 1-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) play at Wake Forest (5-3, 2-2) on Saturday.
The soft-spoken Brown is second among the Cavaliers with 71/2 tackles for a loss this season, and got his fourth sack last weekend when the Cavaliers came within an eyelash of beating No. 5 Louisville.
With one more year ahead of him, he’s eager to see what the future holds.
“I don’t have a whole lot of mileage on my body, so it’s a plus,” he said. ” … I was blessed with the opportunity to have a lot more snaps than I played my previous two years. So looking back, it humbles me and pushes me to drive forward because if it wasn’t for the new coaching staff, I would probably be in the same position.”
Mendenhall, meanwhile, acknowledges that Brown has been wholesale jerseys a challenging player to coach.
“I knew my team needed me and I needed to be in there,” he said. “But at the end of the day, I’ve got to control what I can control and at that point in time, I couldn’t control that I was cramping up. So I’ll do what I can do this week, just prepare and treat my body better than I did the week previously and come ready to play.”
Virginia has four games remaining, and needs to win them all to make a bowl for the first time since 2011.
“We’re just ready to attack it,” Brown said. “It’s not too much thinking involved. It’s one game at a time and that’s the right mind to have. And you just got to take it one game at a time. If cheap NFL jerseys you’re looking past Wake Forest and at the other teams then you won’t be able to really lock in on the task at hand, which is Wake Forest.
“So just taking it one game at a time, like I said.”
This time last season, the Panthers (9-0) were 8-1 when they faced off against 9-0 Old Mill. The Patriots marched into the playoffs with an emphatic, 45-12 victory, then fell to county rival Broadneck in the region final.
For the Patriots, this week has been business as usual at practice. Buffalo Bills jerseys They will rely on a steady ground-and-pound approach with senior running cheap jerseys back Sirus wholesale NFL jerseys Gay leading the way on offense, along with play-action passes peppered in to take the top off of the Panthers’ defense.
The Patriots (9-0) will look to close out their its second consecutive undefeated regular season. Few Anne Arundel teams can rival Old Mill’s recent success on the gridiron. The Panthers are “still building” and “want to be at that point,” and Friday’s game represents a chance to take a big step in that direction.
“That’s what Ric Flair used to always say. Old Mill has been the man for a few years going here, so that’s what we’ve got in front of us.”
